Daniel Quinn in is book “The Story of B” published in 1996 said “If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, it will float there quite placidly. As the water gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death.”
The feeling I’m getting is that most of us in South Africa are being lulled into this frog-like stupor! In any other sane country the appalling lack of leadership and levels of mismanagement that are destroying the very fabric of our society would not be tolerated. The responsible ministers and state officials would be so shamed that they would fall on their swords and the government would be wobbling precariously. But this isn’t the case here. The madness and pillage continue unabated!
How long are we going to stand by and watch this wanton destruction of our country? There have been recent glimmers of hope as evidenced by the widespread opposition to the e-tolling fiasco in Gauteng and the furore surrounding the proposed enacting into law of the Protection of State Information Bill but what about all the other issues?
The levels of dishonesty have reached horrendous levels and there appears to be an almost complete lack of integrity at every level of government activity. The feeding frenzy continues at a frightening rate. We are often told by the spin doctors and stuttering ministers that the culprits represent only a small fraction and that most goverment office bearers and officials are good, honest and hard working. While the facts we observe and constantly see and hear in the media don’t seem to support this, if it indeed true, why don’t these “good guys” take a stand and root out the bad eggs?
A tragic example is the situation in our police services which have become a laughing stock and a complete embarassment. Where are the good cops that we hear about? Are they so spineless that they are prepared to just stand idly by while the service marches on to complete destruction?
Come on fellow South Africans let’s stand together against these evils! If you are prepared to be boiled to death, I’m not!
